San Francisco – Stephen Curry went scoreless in the first quarter, and when that happens, the Warriors are 0-2. Tonight was another example of Golden State’s top scorer struggling to find his rhythm. The Warriors suffered a disappointing 130-105 loss to the Phoenix Suns.
Curry went scoreless in the first quarter and finished the first half with just 2 points. Draymond Green, who has been sidelined with injuries, has been a key factor in creating open shots for Curry. Tonight, however, Curry struggled from beyond the arc, had five shots in the first half, looked fatigued, and provided little defensive impact.
“There’s an understanding of motion offense you try to use gravity at times, you try to get on the ball at times,” said Curry regarding the first quarter. ‘The defense had kind of shifted a little bit more consistently to try to take away off-ball stuff. It was a slow start tonight, which that can’t happen. It’s on me; it’s on all of us to figure out how to get the ball moving, create good shots, and use all the threats we have in this room. It did not go as planned tonight. I don’t ever want to be in a situation where you get five shots in a half. That’s not good basketball.”
Andrew Wiggins and Buddy Hield each knocked down four threes, finishing with 17 points apiece. Curry and Brandin Podziemski added 14 points each. However, it was Devin Booker who stole the show, finishing with 31 points and 11 assists for Phoenix. Despite being snubbed for the NBA All-Star Game, Booker proved why he is one of the league’s best players tonight.
“I think the whole team had it rolling,” Booker said. “We’re playing unselfish; we’re defending at a high level. Obviously, Steph (Curry) is always gonna be a tough coverage, and we locked into that. We got stops, secured the ball, and shared the ball very well.”
Golden State trails Phoenix 2-1 in the season series, with the teams set to meet for the fourth and final time on April 8 in Phoenix. The Warriors dropped to 1-19 this season when entering the fourth quarter behind and when shooting below 40.0% from the field.
