Super Bowl Media Day: Patriots Mike Vrable Talks Drake Maye and Seahawks Defense

San Francisco – Mike Vrabel credited Drake Maye’s strong sophomore season and MVP-caliber performance to his natural talent, athleticism, and competitive drive. He emphasized Maye’s ability to play both inside and outside the pocket, noting that his athleticism contributes to his accuracy and playmaking ability. Vrabel also highlighted Maye’s continued growth as a leader and his commitment to learning, calling his performance a major reason for the team’s success.

Regarding Maye’s health, Vrabel said the quarterback “spoke for himself” about how he’s feeling but noted that practice went well and the team is off to a strong start this week.

When asked about Sam Darnold, Vrabel praised his toughness and poise under pressure, pointing to a recent play where Darnold stood firm in the pocket despite taking a big hit and delivered a key completion. Vrabel said that kind of courage is essential to being an elite quarterback in the NFL.

Patriots players K’Lavon Chaisson and Jaylinn Hawkins, along with coach Mike Vrabel, spoke to the media about their preparation and what it took to reach the Super Bowl.

Vrabel also said Seattle’s defense presents a significant challenge due to its ability to generate quarterback pressure and disrupt offenses up front. He emphasized the importance of staying balanced offensively, establishing the run game, and using play-action rather than turning the game into a pure drop-back passing attack. While the Seahawks allows yards after the catch, Vrabel noted that it’s not due to poor tackling but rather their coverage schemes, adding that they are fundamentally sound and strong tacklers who limit explosive plays.

On his own defense, Vrabel expressed pride in the unit’s steady improvement throughout the season despite roster changes and an unexpected coordinator switch. He credited both the players and coaching staff for continuing to develop and play their best football late in the year, emphasizing that sustained improvement is key for playoff-caliber teams. He added that the defense will need its strongest performance yet to secure a win on Sunday.
