Los Angeles – Christian McCaffrey finally had his big game. He made history in just his second game with his new team. McCaffrey scored two touchdowns and was behind the pass for a winning touchdown as well. He was simply unstoppable against the Los Angeles Rams. The 49ers demolished LA 31-14, a much needed win before they head into the Bye Week.
McCaffrey is the only player since Hall of Famer, LaDainian Tomlinson in 2005 when he was with the San Diego Chargers. McCaffrey threw, rushed and caught a touchdown in San Francisco’s win over the Rams today. He went 18-for-24 with one touchdown on the ground. And went 1-for-1 for 34 yards for a passing touchdown. McCaffrey also had 8 receptions for 55 yards.
McCaffrey talked about his touchdowns and learning from his younger brothers who are quarterbacks:
“Both of my little brothers are quarterbacks,” said McCaffrey. “So, I learned a lot from them. I used to always want to play quarterback because it was the best position. But, I’ve been a running back since I was seven.
The best advice I got from my brothers was, ‘keep my elbow up and it helps when someone’s wide open too.”
McCaffrey became the only player in the Super Bowl Era to register at least 1 passing D, 1 rushing TD and 1 rec. TD and 30-or-more passing yds., 30-or-more rushing yds. and 30-or-more rec. yds. in a single game. McCaffrey has now registered 2 passing TDs of 30 or-more yds. in his career [vs. NO (12/17/18)], the 2nd-most by a RB in the NFL dating back to 1970 (HOF RB Walter Payton – 3). He is 1 of 7 RBs in the NFL since 1970 to throw atleast 1 passing TD for 2 different teams. McCaffrey registered 183 all-purpose yds. on the day, marking his 6th game of the season and the 38th of his career with 100-or-more all-purpose yds.
With 94 rushing yds. and 55 rec. yds. on the day, McCaffrey registered 50-or-more rushing yds. and 50-or-more rec. yds. in the same game for the 25th time in his career, the most in the NFL since he entered the league in 2017. With 8 recepts. on the day, McCaffrey has registered 400 recepts. in his career, joining HOF RB Roger Craig (434 recepts.) and New Orleans Saints RB Alvin Kamara (406 recepts.) as the only running backs with 400-or-more recepts. in their first 6 seasons in NFL history.
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan talked about the play for Christian McCaffrey and how he’s helped the team:
By the second half San Francisco dominated on both sides of the football. The 49ers recorded three touchdowns while McCaffrey scored twice. They also shut down LA’s offense completely. DL Nick Bosa registered 3 tackles and brought down Rams QB Matthew Stafford or an 11-yd. sack, giving him 8.0 sacks on the season and 32.5 in his career, the 9th-most in franchise history.
Bosa has now registered 8.0 sacks through the first 8 games of a season, the most by a member of the 49ers through 8 games since DL Bryant Young in 2005 (8.0 sacks). Freddy Krueger LB Fred Warner registered 12 tackles, 1 PD and 1.0 sack, marking the 6th sack of his career and his 4th career game with 10-or-more tackles and 1.0-or-more sacks.
Nick Bosa talked about their defensive strategies:
The 49ers improved to 77-69-3 overall against the Rams, including a 39-34-1 record on the road. San Francisco has won each of the past 8 regular season meetings between the two teams, including the last 3 at SoFi Stadium.
The Niners swept the season series for the 4th-consecutive season. Head coach Kyle Shanahan improved to 9-3 in the regular season against the Rams. San Francisco is off next week and will look forward to the time off.
