Oakland – Bay Area native Jason Kidd, head coach of the Dallas Mavericks, has announced a new partnership with Boston Celtics Finals “MVP” Jaylen Brown called the XChange initiative. XChange aims to bridge the racial wealth gap by generating $5 billion in net wealth for historically marginalized communities.
Following the recent launch of the Boston XChange, Oakland is set to become the next city to join this national effort. The initiative will partner with Oakstop, a long-standing community anchor organization in Oakland.
XChange employs a place-based strategy to drive solutions for improving urban environments. By integrating real estate development, business education, technology, and cultural competency, the initiative seeks to foster economic growth in targeted communities.
Both the Boston XChange (BXC) and the Oakland XChange (OXC) will serve as hubs, using commercial real estate to empower underserved communities and create models for shared real estate ownership. This approach aims to facilitate asset building and economic opportunity for community members.
The OXC initiative promises to rejuvenate areas of Oakland affected by crime or high rent, offering a new opportunity for local businesses to thrive despite economic challenges. Kidd and Brown are dedicated to making this process smoother and more accessible for struggling businesses.
Congresswoman Barbara Lee has expressed her support for this initiative, and local leader including Deputy Mayor Dr. Kimberly Mayfield and District 3 Council Member Carroll Fife have also endorsed the project, offering their gratitude. They believe that this partnership has the potential to transform Oakland, addressing longstanding issues of crime and political corruption.
