49ers beat the Panthers 20-9 on Monday Night Football

San Francisco – It’s not about how you start, it’s about how you finish. Christian McCaffrey capped the night with a touchdown against his former team, Ji’Ayir Brown came up huge with two interceptions, and a missed field goal led to the Niners 20–9 victory over the Carolina Panthers on Monday Night Football.

Even on a difficult night for Brock Purdy, the 49ers’ defense controlled the game from start to finish, smothering the Panthers offense and delivering the key plays needed to secure the win. Brown was everywhere, flying to the ball and making critical stops.

Bryce Young had little answer for San Francisco’s relentless pressure. On Carolina’s final push, his short pass intended for Tetairoa McMillan was intercepted by Brown. Moments later, Ryan Fitzgerald missed a 47-yard field goal as the clock expired, closing the door on the Panthers’ comeback hopes.

“He was awesome,” said head coach Kyle Shanahan on [Ji’Ayir Brown]. “We’ll see more on the tape, but it felt like it was his best game as a Niner. He’s been playing at a high level here for a while, but those two picks were huge and looked like he made a number of good tackles too.”

“God is great. God is great,” Brown said. “I’ve always prided myself on being a ball hog, and like you said, it’s just been slow. You just keep at it, keep going, keep taking it game by game, waiting for your opportunity. And tonight, I was able to capitalize.”

Brown recorded five tackles and intercepted Bryce Young twice, marking his first picks of the season and bringing his career total to five. His interceptions were his first since he grabbed one against the Dallas Cowboys on October 27, 2024.

With two interceptions on the night, Brown became the first 49ers player to record multiple picks in a single game since former cornerback Charvarius Ward accomplished the feat against the Arizona Cardinals on December 17, 2023.

The 49ers’ defense held Carolina to just 1-of-7 on third down (14.3%), a dominant showing that set the tone all night. It was the unit’s best third-down performance since they shut down the Miami Dolphins on December 4, 2022, allowing 0-of-7 conversions in that matchup.

It started as the McCaffrey Show on the opening drive, with the veteran back racking up 28 rushing yards and 12 receiving yards to set up Purdy’s 12-yard touchdown to Jauan Jennings for an early 7–0 advantage.

On the next defensive series, San Francisco forced the Panthers to punt, but the tide quickly shifted. Purdy’s misfire intended for Jennings was intercepted by Jaycee Horn, putting Carolina in prime position. But the 49ers’ defense answered immediately. When Bryce Young tried to hit Mitchell Evans in the end zone, Brown jumped the route for a clutch interception that erased the Panthers’ scoring chance and kept control of the game.

With seven receptions on the night, McCaffrey now has 81 this season. Reaching 75-plus receptions for the fifth time in his career, he becomes just the fourth running back in NFL history to hit that mark.

On the opening drive, McCaffrey logged six carries for 28 yards and three receptions for 12 yards. His nine total touches tied his career high for the most touches on an opening drive, matching the nine he posted against the Carolina Pantherson December 17, 2017, earlier in his career.

The second quarter was even more chaotic for San Francisco. McCaffrey coughed up a rare fumble, Purdy threw two more interceptions, forcing the 49ers’ defense to survive nearly ten straight minutes on the field. Under that pressure,on a critical 3rd down, Malik Mustapha delivered a jarring hit that halted the Carolina Panthers drive and forced them to settle for points.

By the third quarter McCaffrey made up for his earlier miscue, breaking through the line for a 12-yard touchdown to push the 49ers’ lead to 17–3.
